Ceresole walk itinerary
The walk is about 8 km which takes about 4 hours with breaks. The itinerary is as follows:
- Take Bus no.21 to Schleitheim from Schaffhausen
- Get out at 'Schleitheim Station'.
- Walk through the village Schleitheim to the Gemeindehaus. Right in the beginning on the left there's the Gasthaus Hirschen, where Ceresole used to stay to make the border crossings.
- At the station "Gemeindehaus" go left and walk hill upwards. There's small road going to the wood.
- Enter the wood at the Ländli / Holeneich. Follow the hiking paths signs to Grimmelshausen.
- In the wood follow the yellow hiking paths sign in direction north-west
- After 20-30 minutes walking the edge of the wood a ditch with a small stream in between is in sight. This is the border.
- Continue till way turns right upwards. Turn on the left in direction edge of the wood. Watch out for border mark. Border mark no. 487 is an old one from 1839. Border mark, which Ceresole describes several times can be found right at the edge of the forest. No.488 was replaced in 1951 because it was broken.
- Follow the edge of the forest upwards till. After 5 minutes there's fireplace with table for breaks.
- From there go done the street to the Reichenberger Höfe.
- After passing Reichenberg, take at the cross-way downward to Grimmelshofen the small street on the right. Ceresole was arrested there in December 1942 by soldiers.
- After 1-2 km on the street the village Fützen and the railway viaduct can be seen in the north-west.
- It takes about 1h 20 to arrive at the viaduct. Ceresole was captured there in August 1918 by German soldiers.
- Walk under viaduct and turn on left after 150m. Follow the upwards in order to get to the railway station.
- At the railway of Fützen Ceresole had to wait for the train in November 1933. As inspiration for his speech afterwards in Stuttgart he stole there a Nazi propaganda poster. In Fützen there's a museum train which goes to Weizen or Blumberg. In connection with museum railway timetable there buses back to Schaffhausen or local train from Weizen to Waldshut. For details see http://www.sauschwaenzlebahn.de
An option is to walk till Blumberg, which is an additional 2h plus 6 km in order to take the train there and to visit railway museum. There are marvellous viaducts to see along the way (see also http://www.sauschwaenzlebahn.de )
